One of my clients/friends is Jayne Baker-Harrower, who runs the Bare Enough Sphynx Cattery in Phelan. Jayne and I met at a cat show last December when she was showing Channing, her Lykoi cat, which is one of the new breeds of cat. Lykois are called the werewolf cat, and the appearance of their sparse fur is a natural mutation, not a designer breed. Jayne will be breeding Lykois though the first ones won't be available until next year.
But her Sphynx are available and Jayne was recently contacted by Kateryna Shalayeva, lead singer of the band Stereolizza, because she wanted to use a Sphynx in her latest music video. So Jayne made the long trek to Los Angeles (with her adorable granddaughters) so that Jax, her Sphynx stud, could be in the "Cool Cat" video and fortunately for me I was allowed to tag along.
In the video, an old man will morph into Jax. There was another cat there, too, this one covered in fur stripes, who would play a different man. I don't know what it will all look like when it's finished but it was pretty awesome to watch. One reason it was fun to watch was because everything was shot on green screen, which allows you to easily drop out anything that's green and replace it with something else.
But besides the filming, Kateryna lives in an old Hollywood apartment building in Los Angeles. I needed to run back to my car to get some cat toys to catch Mr. Jax's attention and as I re-entered the building, I was struck by the light falling from a skylight onto a carpeted staircase. It looked so gorgeous, I thought Jax would look amazing on it. When Jax was finished playing his part, admirably, I might add, I asked Jayne if we could do a shoot on the staircase and she said yes.
By this time, though, the light wasn't quite as good. It was pretty dark and I didn't want to take the time to set up lights. I took a few of Jax on the stairwell but wait... the magic happened. I noticed a niche on the landing... a worn plaster wall with a niche, probably for a telephone back in the day... and Jayne put Jax on it and we got incredible photos. So for a photo shoot I wasn't expecing, I got portfolio-worthy images of Jax, my first Sphynx.
Thank you, Jayne! I will happily photography any cat you breed!
